Short but well worth reading

Belle Walker is a young human woman that lives on a planet with many non-humans her society considers monsters. A long time before she was born, a ship bearing her people reached the planet where they are now settled. They worked out a deal to have a small area of land for themselves separate from the native beings. Up until now, the two groups have lived entirely apart.

Among human society on the planet, girls are auctioned off to the highest bidder at age eighteen. There is no marriage. Now it is Belle's turn to be bid on, but the unexpected happens. One of the so called "monsters" appears and wins her for his own. Though she resists going with the strange and forbidding man, he takes her anyway. From that point on her life changes in ways she never imagined. Perhaps the monsters aren't quite what her people believed, but Belle learns the hard way there is no escape. She must overcome her fears and adjust to a sexual environment she has never imagined. If she manages it, captivity may very well be the thing that sets her wild heart free.

This is a well written, fast paced novella that will keep you turning pages until the end. The situations feel real and explore the idea of alien-human bonding on a deep level. While the story is based on fantasy, you can't help but be swept up into the psychology of how a person would react to such a situation. Particularly a woman of strong will. If you enjoy erotica, are not averse to reading about dominance and submission, and like a sci-fi twist, this may just be the book for you. Some people may consider this story too short, but I think it covers everything it needs to. Heavy world building isn't necessary as the focus is on Belle's relationship to her alien captors. It does this well and doesn't need much more elaboration.

I have read all of Kitty Thomas' books and now download them as soon as she announces their release. She has never failed to impress me, regardless of the setting she choses. Her books are not for everyone, but those who enjoy erotica that doesn't just explore the physical aspects, but also the psychological, will appreciate her work. It outclasses the rest of its genre by a mile.

Not worth the price.

Edit: Dark Erotica usually involves a non-consensual storyline that might include force, violence, brutality, and humiliation. Don't purchase this book with any romantic idea of a happily ever after.

When you read my review please understand that when I purchased this book I was not aware of its intended darker story. At the time I did not see any reference given in its summary about it being dark erotica. It took me 30 minutes to purchase the book, read the story, realize what I had just purchased, return the story, and delete it from my library. I am not sure which page count to go with but this book is almost $3.00 and it has only 54/80 pages.

I know there is an audience for this genre, so if you enjoy the whole dark & erotic/Stockholm Syndrome storyline and have $2.99 burning a hole in your pocket but not a lot of time to read a book then here is your book.

If you are trying to decide if you want to read this book based on the plot there is an excellent summary above. If you really want to get a look at the writing style of the author there is also a short "look inside" of the book too. The look inside is not the beginning of the book. First Bella is kidnapped off the street, stuck in a small box with many scared women, and eventually lined up on the auction block. This is where Bella is purchased by the big bad scary "Alpha" alien. He is so bad, yet so good...

If this was a complete story I might consider this a SPOILER

but what bothered me is that at the end of the book Bella isn't even the same person anymore. As a reader we are given a character to identify with. Bella is a spunky, slightly misguided 18-year-old girl. She is placed on the auction block, purchased, and quickly whisked off to a whole different planet. She is easily convinced that her Master is right and seems to adapt to her circumstances fast but what choice does she have? She is told how to think and of course why it's the correct way to think and then sexually manhandled into submission.

A quick example of her new correct thought process:
"He really does love me the most; he told me so.I understand that as Master it's his job to teach the other abducted women and his brothers through "show and tell". How else are they to learn the proper way to get a woman ready for sex? He passes me around to his brothers like a toy because sharing is good. He told me so.It's what Master likes..."

As it turns out the brothers all have really enormous, gigantic, massive, huge, large... "rods" that are just too big for these women to handle and it's Master's job to teach (with Bella as his visual aid) some basic techniques and introduce a few helpful tools for his men to overcome the overwhelming difficulties associated with being so large.

My final thoughts are that you don't have to agree with my opinion on the book. My review is based on why I personally didn't like the book. I am not making up false tid-bits of information to discredit the book. I am just explaining what I took away from the book. If you like this style of book I have now given you a good reason to end your internal debate and read the reference manual of a book for yourself.

Another slice of dark perfection from Kitty Thomas

Set in an ambiguous future, humanity has left behind the `source planet' and settled in a new and backwards world. Science and technology have regressed, books are artefacts and women are commodities once again. On her eighteenth birthday Annabelle `Belle' Walker, along with other ripe young women, are being auctioned to the highest bidder. Under the pretence of redistributing city funds, nubile young women are put on the block and sold for a price - the lucky ones have family members and lovers who will buy them back and set them free. But for the unlucky sold it's a life of quiet humiliation . . . or, as Belle is about to discover, something much worse.

Belle's fiery spirit attracts the wrong sort of buyer - a monster from the city outskirts, a dragon-man with red skin and orange eyes, sharp teeth and an impressive wing-span. Belle is taken back to his cave, where she will pleasure both him and his blue-skinned brother, referring to them as `Master' and `Sir' respectively.

But will this monster be Belle's end, or will he help set her free?

`The Auction' is a new novella from dark literary erotica author, Kitty Thomas.

I love Kitty Thomas. Honestly, she can do no wrong. I haven't read a novel of hers that I haven't loved, and `The Auction' is another slice of perfection from her deliciously dark pen.

You wouldn't know it to look at the beautiful front cover, but `The Auction' is actually a sci-fi/dark erotica novelette. Although this gorgeous renaissance-feel cover doesn't scream `sci-fi', it actually leads into the world-building of `The Auction'. In this indeterminate future, humanity has had to relocate from Earth and in the process society has taken a giant leap backwards. Women are property once again - to be traded and sold according to the gavel of the auctioneer. Thomas does swift world-building and orientation for the reader with regards to this new-world/old-world society - almost conjuring the universe of Joss Whedon's `Firelfy'.

We see this strangely regressed world through the eyes of Belle Walker. She is a young woman who has found fascination in the books of the past, and has come to articulate the auctioning of women as a barbaric and bizarre - likening it to virginal sacrifice and debutante balls. Belle has been dreading her auction and has been preparing for her day of sale. She has been strategically pleasuring the city's richest sons; in the meagre hopes of gaining their coin and her freedom upon purchase. But she doesn't count on an outskirts monster raising his hand for the highest bid.

When Belle is taken to the monster Master's cave and introduced to his brother, `Sir' (her other bed-mate) she is shocked, horrified . . . and aroused. These men are dragon-like, with wings, blue and red-tinged skin and reddened eyes. But they are also thoroughly masculine; lean and muscled to perfection. Belle cannot believe the way she wants them, and is willing to succumb to them. Her obvious arousal in captivity perverts her conscience and she wonders if she is losing a bit of her soul and dignity, bit by bit, every time she wantonly and willingly succumbs to these brothers . . .

I loved the world Kitty Thomas created. It's a little bit sci-fi, with a touch of historic slavery and plenty of dark erotica. I thought the inclusion of `monster masters' was quite ingenious - so often in Kitty's works the dominant (human) male is bordering on demonic (`Comfort Food', being a prime example). But in `The Auction' the heroine's sexual partners are, literally, monsters - and one of them even has a devilish resemblance. It's a nice bit of fantasy to play with. And, this being a Kitty Thomas novel(la); the sex scenes are divinely delicious. This is a short story, 20000 words, but she takes the time to write languorous and decadently-detailed sex scenes that will leave readers sizzling.

My only complaint about `The Auction' is that it was too short! I wanted more, more, more! I would love to read another novella set in this universe (perhaps revisiting the monster family?) or even a full-length novel set in the same world. `The Auction' was another lovely bit of sexy-sinister writing from the darkly talented erotica author, Kitty Thomas.

Lots of helpful and interesting insight. Easy read, but distractingly poorly edited.

Radwan argues effectively that in order to avoid the hurt of a breakup, we should turn to introspection. Why am I finding it so hard to get over this person? Why do I fall in love so easily? What is it really that I am in need of that is causing me to invest so much of myself in my romantic relationships? He argues that understanding is the antidote, and I couldn't agree more.

Intimacy, Radwan says, is what we are looking for. We all need intimacy, and for those who cannot get enough of it from family and friends (this is not sexual intimacy), they are more prone to becoming attached to their partner or to becoming "addicted to love," moving quickly from relationship to relationship in order to avoid dealing with the hurt of a breakup. He explains why people fall for the people they do, why people don't leave bad relationships, and why we have a hard time giving up hope for reunification.

Honestly, if he hired a decent editor, I feel like he could make a lot more money off of this book. It's not too hard to see past the numerous grammatical errors, as it is a quick read and is easy to follow, but along with the mediocre organization of content, it can certainly be a distraction. Other than that minor warning, I would recommend this book. Radwan provides some great tips and advice, such as the Block Method, used to prevent unwanted thoughts and memories of your ex from lingering in the forefront of your mind. If you are struggling with a breakup, this is the book for you. Just have some patience knowing that English is not his first language.

I’ve never read a “self-help” book in my life

Read this book. I’ve never read a “self-help” book in my life, but at this point in my break-up, I was willing to try anything. After a month of crying every day, feeling sad (for lack of a better term), and going through what felt like excruciating pain, I was ready to try just about anything. Again, I have never read any kind of break-up, self-help book in my life, and it seemed silly to me to even try it because I’ve read a ton of articles about this exact subject, and they all seemed ridiculous or not insightful or helpful at all. I was at the point where I knew I was better off w/o him, I knew I would eventually be okay, I knew I would eventually find someone else, I know all of this…. SO WHY DOES THIS STILL HURT SO BADLY???? I bought the book. It works. Some of the things in the book are things I PROBABLY could have concluded on my own, but I honestly hadn’t yet, and I probably wouldn’t have until a year from now when I’m completely over my ex. That still made it worth it because this book was able to do in a few days what I’ve been trying to do in over a month, and probably wouldn’t have been able to do for several more months (someone said that in a previous review as well). If your pain was anywhere near as intense as mine, and this review helps you buy this book, then I’ve done some good here. If nothing else, to me, it’s even worth the ‘hope’ that it may alleviate what you’re going through. Good luck.

Taught me how to gain back my life and fill the big space left after a breakup, and how to heal the pain and sorrow accompanying tough breakup. Funny book!

My daughter loved this book when she was a child. She chose it as her favorite to add to a charity auction basket. It is a very funny book that would be appropriate for a boy or girl around 2nd or 3rd grade. I even read it as a child. It is a classic! All the books dealing with fudge are great. I had no idea they were still in print. I need to go ahead and start collecting them for my younger two children.

Awesome Third Book in the Fudge Series

Would purchase this book again and again. I've actually purchased it twice, once when my older children were small, and now that I have younger children again. You can't go wrong with the Fudge series. Recommend reading Tales of a Fourth Grade Nothing and Otherwise Known as Sheila the Great first.

WARNING!!!! REVEALS SANTA ISN'T REAL!! MAKE SURE YOUR KIDS DON'T BELIEVE BEFORE READING!

I am so upset! My son was given summer reading for his CATHOLIC school. He was to choose 2 out of 3 books - this being one of them. I remember Judy Blume as a kid and so I chose this as one of the books. He is only ENTERING 3rd grade. He is my oldest son. He was reading the book and we got to chapter 10 named "Santa Who". He starts to read the chapter and I instantly become nervous where the book is leading. He of course LOVES Santa and so he was so excited for this chapter. As he started to read and I could see where it was leading - he was having trouble with one of the words so I took the book to help him with the word and I quickly skimmed ahead through the rest of the chapter to see what the book was going to reveal as soon as I realized it was going to reveal that Santa was actually the parents I instantly took the book away and made an excuse as to why I needed a break - then I instantly called my mother and husband to see what they thought I should do. I was NOT ready to break my 8 year olds heart. I decided to read the rest of the chapter telling my son I was giving the night off and I would finish reading the chapter and then of course I skipped over the parts stating Santa wasn't real and changed the parts I needed to. I am now heart broken realizing he will start school next week and that the other kids in his class will have read the book and so clearly I will need to "talk" to him. Neither him nor I were ready for this information to be revealed. I am heartbroken that my school chose this as one of the summer reading books at this age. When I was a kid this was a 4th-5th grade book and I know everyone has pushed these kids into so much more so much sooner but to take this away too was just heartbreaking. Had I known I never would have let him start the book. He hasn't even started 3rd grade and this is what they have him reading?? In the book even the kindergartener is called stupid for believing in Santa (a 5 year old really?) and he says he doesn't and never did believe. I am sure this is a fine read for an older child or a child who doesn't believe in Santa but it certainly wasn't Judy Blume's place to steal my 8 year olds childhood.

Dr. Richard Selznick is a psychologist, nationally certified school psychologist, adjunct graduate school professor, and assistant professor of pediatrics. As the director of the Cooper Learning Center, he oversees a program that assesses and treats a broad range of learning and school-based behavioral problems in children. The Cooper Learning Center is a Division of the Children's Regional Hospital of Cooper University Health Care. The author of two books, The Shut-Down Learner: Helping Your Academically Discouraged Child, and School Struggles, both published by Sentient Publications, Dr. Selznick has helped parents with their children's struggles in school for more than 25 years. Excellent resource for our state departments requiring or encouraging early screening for dyslexia/reading disorders!

Dyslexia Screening: Essential Concepts . . . Is an excellent tool to have when planning and designing strategies to implement early screening and intervention programs in our school districts. After 10 years of working with dyslexic children, I was thrilled to see the importance of standardized test as well as "informal measures." Dr. Selznick covers the key areas and behaviors to be observing and many ways to make early screening work in your school environment. The key to finding success for all, meaning children in need of early intervention, teachers in need of tools, and administrators looking for a plan that will work is Beginning with this book.

As a reminder, the purpose of screening was clearly stated: "dyslexia screening is a tool for identifying children who are at risk for this learning disability, particularly in preschool, kindergarten, or first grade. This means that the screening does not “diagnose” dyslexia. Rather, it identifies “predictor variables” that raise red flags, so parents and teachers can intervene early and effectively."

Much needed guide for public schools

This book is an important guide for public schools in states with new laws that require them to screen for dyslexia.

In this "first of its kind" book, Dr. Selznick shares what he has learned from consulting with public schools in New Jersey about how to implement their new law which requires schools to screen for dyslexia.

In this step-by-step "how and why" guide, written in everyday language, Dr. Selznick shares practical advice on which screening tools to use to limit the process to just 30 minutes, who should do the screening, which students to screen first, how to interpret the results, and sample letters to send to parents of students with "red flags" of dyslexia.

He also shares tips on using the scores to determine the type and intensity of intervention, and how to monitor progress.

This much needed book is sure to become an essential tool used by public schools across the nation.

Practical, easy to use guide for determining early signs of reading challenges

As an administrator in a school that teaches students with dyslexia, I can say confidently that this easy to read guide is a must have for educators in determining early signs of reading differences. Dr. Selznick, in his simple, no nonsense writing style, explains the key components of dyslexia screening. He offers suggestions on implementing these screenings into schools that are manageable and useful. Dr. Selznick also identifies various assessments to use and their benefits. One thing to note is what Dr. Selznick proposes is not a dyslexia diagnosis but rather a way to determine early signals of reading struggles. I would highly recommend this book to any private or public school to help develop a plan for screening young learners. It is also very informative for parents to learn more about signs of reading challenges and what schools should be doing to support students. A handy appendix provides many resources.

Beautiful

True, there is an abundance of flourished birds as examples in this book, but each one is beautifully done... The designs are all different examples of how TO flourish something, whether it be a bird or not. The bird is taken into account so much due to it's excellent curvature for practicing with the pen and because the quill pen itself was so important, historically, as the book describes. A lot of the prints are so beautifully ornate that you have to take a good look to even see if there is a bird. But it does offer simple exercise instruction and tips, examples with lettering and such. I do not regret adding this book to my library.

definitely ornate and definitely pictorial...

which isn't a horrible thing.I still think there is lots to learn from the bird flourishes technique wise. But there are more than i had expected. (about 2/3 of the flourishes in this book include a bird or feather) I don't really think there's a whole lot of variation overall. There's not much text swashes in this book, which i had hoped for. Also, they are all very complex and busy looking—i thought there'd be a variety. For the price though, not a bad purchase. i will definitely use this for reference.
