Buen libro, pero muy corto

Escribo estas l�neas en espa�ol debido a que el libro en cuesti�n est� en espa�ol.

Para los que no conocen La Mano Peluda, es un programa de radio en donde la gente llama para contar historias que tienen relaci�n con lo sobrenatural.

Su conductor y autor de este libro siempre comienza el programa diciendo:

"...hoy escucharemos historias que surgen del m�s all�, de lo desconocido, de lo sobrenatural. Soy Juan Ram�n S�enz...y aqu� se respira el miedo."

El libro contiene apenas 8 historias, todas ellas conocidas y/o vividas de cerca por el autor. El estilo del libro no es muy bueno, ya que el lenguaje que emplea es m�s apropiado para la expresi�n oral que para la escrita, pero los temas de estas historias hacen que uno se mantenga leyendo sin despegarse.

En lo personal, yo hubiera preferido un libro con m�s historias, sin importar que fuese m�s caro.

Las 8 historias son:

1-La endemoniada. Una chica juega con la Ouija y su comportamiento cambia enormemente. �La raz�n? Varios seres de obscuridad se apoderan de ella hasta conducirla a la muerte.

2-La venganza del muerto. Un trabajador del metro lleva a su novia a la estaci�n donde hubo una muerte, y el esp�ritu del occiso de apodera de ella buscando vengarse de aquel que lo arroj� a las v�as.

3-El hijo del diablo. Una joven trabajadora dom�stica es v�ctima de una maldici�n. Una noche un demonio la viola y ella queda embarazada. Es el relato m�s espantoso de todos.

4-Un ente en casa. Debajo de la escalera de esta casa hay una puerta dimensional por donde seres extra�os entran y salen.

5-El llamado. La fuerza de las extra�as energ�as de este relato lleg� hasta la cabina donde se transmite el programa. Todo comenz� cuando una mujer encontr� un peque�o mu�eco en la calle y decidi� llevarlo a su casa.

6-El fantasma del avi�n. Este avi�n transport� los cad�veres de personas que participaron en un suicidio colectivo en una isla. Tiempo despu�s, una pasajera es perseguida por un alma que le pide ayuda.

7-La casa de Fidel. Una pareja hereda una casa donde a�os atr�s un joven llamado Fidel hac�a ritos extra�os que terminaron en tragedia. Verdaderamente espantoso.

8-El caso de Josu�. Relato de un joven que, para salir de la pobreza, hizo un pacto. Pero para comenzar, tuvo que ofrecer el alma de un familiar.

El libro indica que en el programa se han relatado m�s de 53 mil historias. Entonces �porqu� s�lo se incluyeron 8?

Only if you've never heard the radio show

I bought this book for my mom's birthday a while back. It was at a reasonable price and interesting to read even-though I had heard most of these stories on Juan Ramon's radio show La Mano Peluda. It is a better read for those who have never heard of the radios how or are curious about the occult. The radio show is waaaaaay better.

Christine Filipak is a graphic designer by trade and spends most of her time doing the layout and designs for all of the Monolith Graphics products. For 8 years she worked as art director for Dark Realms Magazine. A regular feature in each issue of the magazine showcased artwork by Christine in conjunction with a fortune-telling article by "Madame Endora," the popularity of which prompted the design of this deck of fortune-telling cards.

Visually Stunning Oracle Deck

This is a visually stunning Oracle deck created by Christine Filipak and Joseph Vargo of Monolith Graphics. The dramatic artwork is done in a beautifully detailed Art Nouveau style, and combines Egyptian, Greek and Celtic mythologies with Norse, Alchemical, Astrological, and Pagan symbolism. Each card contains a key phrase giving a hint to the meaning, and are easily read upright or reversed. The 48 cards are divided into 5 different categories:

I. The Royal Court - these cards represent powerful influences in the life of the querent, or person asking the question. Here we find The King, The Queen, The Wizard, The Seer, The Knight, The Maiden, The Minstrel and The Harlequin.

2. The Realm of Fable - these cards represent the outside forces that guide and influence the querent. In this category, we have The Golem, The Greenman, Hindrance, Medusa, The Satyr, Seduction, Serendipity, The Siren, The Sphinx, and The Spirit.

3. The Bestiary houses creatures both real and imagined. In this section you will find The Black Cat, The Chimera, The Dragon, The Gryphon, The Raven, The Serpent, The Spider, The Unicorn, The Wolf, and The Wyvern.

4. The Treasury contains the tools that will assist the querent in attaining their goals. In this section is The Caduceus, The Chalice, The Dagger, The Gate, The Hand of Fate, The Hourglass, The Key, Love, The Mystic Circle, The Oracle, The Shield, and The Talisman.

5. The fifth category is entitled The Elements, and are responsible for exerting specific energies on the reading. This group is comprised of The Sun, The Moon, The Stars, Air, Earth, Fire, Water, and The Winds of Change.

The LWB (Little White Book) was very informative, but short. We would have like to read more in depth about each card. Many of the card titles, however, are self explanatory. For example, The Spider represents patience, while The Raven is a harbinger of doom. The Gate tells you that there is an obstacle in your path, while The Hourglass reminds you that time is of the essence. There are 4 Oracle spreads included in the LWB, but in truth, any of the traditional Tarot spreads would work as well. Although not a Tarot deck, Tarot readers will find much that is familiar. The Magician becomes the Wizard, the High Priestess is found as The Seer, and The Chimera is very reminiscent of the 7 of Cups. The Sun and Moon are also similar in meaning to those found in Tarot.

The cards are slightly oversized, but shuffle easily, and appear to be made of relatively sturdy card stock. We would have preferred a slicker finish, however, to ensure their longevity.

As a general rule, we have not used Oracle type decks in past readings, but considering the striking quality of this beautiful deck it will be hard to resist working with it on a regular basis.

Easy to learn, beautifully illustrated!

I finally ordered this set of cards through Amazon and was not disappointed. This is NOT tarot, but work much the same way. It is a great way to introduce fortune telling into your life. The art is very nice. The images are easy to memorize, this is not really required, the cards speak for themselves.(literally, the meanings are written on the cards)

I really admire the deck's artistry, especially the backs. It is as if the cards came from some time forgotten cabinet of curiousities. The feel is geared toward gothic style interpretation without totally leaning on the dark side. The deck's big brother Gothic Tarot is much more serious, as this deals with the classical archetypes directly. Madame Endora could almost be consided a new ager. There is nothing wrong with this at all!

This deck could be easily used by children at a sleep overs and not cause too many nightmares. It is a great place to begin for the amature to turn professional.

Nice cards, Easy to Read, Positive Messages

I've used these cards a few time now and like them very much. Madame Endora's Fortune Cards have a mystical feeling to them like Tarot but are much easier to read. The little book that comes with the deck gives a few layouts that work quite well and it is easy to come up with your own,too. The cards have nice art work that matches the meaning of the card - the meaning is printed on the card face and a more in-depth meaning is included in the book. I find it very easy to use my intuition to know what each card means in its position in the layout. The messages these cards give are very up-beat and positive. If you would like to try your hand at fortune telling and don't want to spend months or years learing the Tarot these are an excellent choice.

Great for friendship and self-esteem discussions

I usually don't purchase new books without seeing reviews but I immediately bought this one and I wasn't disappointed. Julia Cook's books have been useful. As an elementary school counselor I'm always searching for books on friendship. There don't seem to be many out there on how to make friends and what to do if you have friendship problems. Although I also recommend "How to be a friend" by Marc Brown and "My friends and me" by Pat Thomas. I look for books that will appeal to 6-8 year olds. I've already used this book with groups and it's worked out well.

So for the plot: The Brown colored pencil feels alone and left out. A few of the other colored pencils tell him he needs to be a good friend to make friends. Each of the colors has a specific positive quality. Brown is a combination of all the other colors so he has those qualities within him. He takes their advice and begins to recognize his own strengths. He changes his ways and does things to try and help out the other pencils. He feels better about himself and now has friends.

The story did repeat some things to try and make the story hit home but I'm not sure it was necessary. A couple of pages almost felt out of place and were a little too long. For instance, towards the end Brown listens to a presentation on how to take over the art supply market. He was doing this to support his friend but I don't think the audience this is geared to would understand the situation, nor did it add to the story.

Overall, the book has a good message that resonates with children. It is easy to use in discussion regarding friendship and self esteem and I would buy it again.

Perfect book for my 6 year old in first grade

Perfect book for my 6 year old in first grade. He has had trouble making friends at school. This book goes over how to be a good friend and what makes each crayon in the pencil box unique. Brown learns what is unique about him and what he can do to help the other crayons. Brown use to complain and carry around a lot of negative energy that the other crayons didn't like. This book is perfect for our situation!!

Some of the reviews said this book is racist. ABDOLUTELY NOT!!! I would honestly ignore the one racist comments when choosing this book. All of the colors in the are talked about. Brown is the main character.

The book goes over negative energy and how to be positive. I love this book! I was skeptical about the reviews that said it was A racist book I bought this book half thinking I may need to return it. This book beyond surpassed my expectations. Very happy with this book.

More of a self esteem book than a making friends book

I bought this for my 5 year old. He has some issues with empathy and thinking about other people, so I'm concerned that he is going to have trouble making real friends in school. He does NOT have any issues with self esteem, if anything he has the opposite problem.

I thought this was a book about how to make friends. But really, it's a book on why friends are important and that you are special and deserve to have friends. The book is very very wordy. There are a couple of entire pages that could easily be removed from the book without affecting the storyline. It's just too long for young children.

Also, there's no real practical information. The first half of the book covers how the brown crayon doesn't have any friends and basically hates himself. Then by talking to a bunch of other crayons, he discovers that he is worthwhile after all, and he starts to make friends. But I didn't feel there were enough details in actually helping a young child make friends. One of the themes was "to make friends you need to be a good friend", which is awesome! but the examples and guidance were terrible. There are extremely specific examples - like the brown crayon listens to another crayon's crazy business plans. My son is too young to understand that this is trying to say that you should think of others and listen, even if you aren't super-interested. Honestly I would have been better off just making a list of friend-making skills and reading them to him and giving him some general examples.

I actually felt that improving your self esteem was discussed more than making friends. Accepting who you are and learning to like yourself were major themes. If that's what you are looking for - I still can't hardily recommend this book because I feel it is too long unless your child is a bit older, in which case they might find the characters too childish. 3 stars is listed as "It's ok" and that's exactly how I would describe this book.

My most used reference

Ever since getting this text shortly after it came out I have referenced it far more than any of my other laser/optics books. I am especially pleased with the author's treatment of Gaussian optics and ray tracing. The only place it lacks is in some spectroscopic applications. It would have been nice to see a section on mode matching into an optical cavity, also.

This book, along with Lasers by Siegman, are the best books on lasers out right now. It has definitely been worth the money. Basic enough for a novice, but thorough enough for a practicing professional. You cant go wrong with this book

A great book for beginners and professionals

As an Optics Ph.D., I have studied from many different books written by different authors with different backgrounds. When it comes to Lasers, this book definitely makes the top 3 reference books (together with Siegman and Svelto).

This book distinguishes itself from similar ones in two major aspects. First one is the very well written Chapters 2 and 3, where the author introduces the matrix approach for cavity design. It is extremely useful for anyone who is working with free space lasers, and this book covers all the information and derivations for this powerful and practical approach which many other books underrate. The second aspect is the overall organization and the style of the book (easy to follow derivations and clear explanations) which make this book ideal for self-learning students.

If you are a beginner in laser physics, or a professional who is building lasers, you will find very useful and complete information in this book.
