Previously he worked at the University of Manchester as Chair of Pedagogy and Teacher Development at the University of Manchester, School of Education, as Chair of School Leadership and Management at the University of Newcastle and as senior at Warwick Institute of Education. He is an acknowledged expert in the field of Educational and Teacher Effectiveness and is co-editor of the journal ‘School Effectiveness and School Improvement’. Biblical View of Biblical Leadership

Too often I have found that leadership books given to pastors and church leaders are focused on business ethics, business techniques, and other worldly methods. While these methods may not be right or wrong, these books fail to take an honest look at leadership from the Bible. We are not take the Bible plus the world's leadership values and reinforce them upon the Church but we are to be biblical and that is it (Titus 2:1).

That is why I enjoyed Dr. John MacArthur's THE BOOK ON LEADERSHIP. As a teacher of the Word who loves the Word, Dr. MacArthur faithfully seeks to teach what the Scriptures teach about leadership. His concern is not the latest how-to books or the latest Church Growth gimmicks but his heart is to follow the Bible completely in all areas of church leadership.

Each chapter covers a portion of what the Bible teaches about leadership. Whether you are a leader in the church or you have biblical questions about leadership, I urge you to turn to this book. While I didn't agree with MacArthur all the time, he does seek to build a biblical case.

The only drawback to this book is that it didn't focus on leaders being people of prayer. I agree with MacArthur 100% that we need strong theology, strong preaching and teaching, and Christ-like leaders but one of the traits of being like Jesus is prayer (Luke 11:1; 18:1). We need men of God who's knees are worn out and their eyes are red from the tears they have wept over the condition of the modern Church. We need preachers who will stand in the pulpit and deliver and word from God that they received while on their face in worship before a holy God. We need men of prayer (1 Timothy 2:1-6, 8).

Impressive.

First, the outside cover of this book is extremely impressive. It LOOKS like leather. I had to touch it to make sure that it was not. The edging at the top and bottom of each page is normal, smooth and even. However, the outside edge of each page has an old journal look, uneven or torn. The combined effect draws the eye to the book.

Godly Principles of Leadership

John MacArthur's latest book, unimaginatively titled The Book on Leadership, has one of the finest-looking covers I have ever seen. With its leather-looking cover, rough-cut pages, gold lettering and marbled inside pages, it looks like a wonderful, valuable, antique book. Truth be told, I probably would not have purchased it were it not for that cover. I am not so shallow that I would purchase it based soley on the cover, but a great cover and an author I respect are too much for me to pass up.

In this book, MacArthur provides his spin on a topic that is gaining prominence in the church. I suspect the books published on the subject of leadership in the church in the past five years would by far outnumber thoese published in the prior 2000 years of Christianity. Leadership has become a buzz-word, and leadership skills are more highly-valued by many than the ability to write good sermons, to relate to people or to express clear doctrine. For many people today a pastor's role should primarily concern leadership with the preaching of the Word taking on a secondary role. In this context I looked forward to gleaning from the wisdom of John MacArthur.

This book is based around the apostle Paul (rather than Nehemiah, who seems to be the subject of many leadership manuals), drawing lessons about leadership through two of the situations he faced: his time in prison and his time pastoring the church at Corinth. I was surprised to find that the leadership principles outlined by the author are not expositorily drawn out of the Scripture, for expository teaching is what we have come to expect from MacArthur. Instead, he uses Paul's life to point to principles of leadership. For example, the sixth principle of leadership is that a leader is optimistic and enthusiastic. MacArthur shows this in Paul's life by referencing Acts 27:25 where the apostle tells the men aboard his doomed ship to "take heart ... for I have faith in God that it will be exactly as I have been told." There are twenty six of these principles introduced in similar fashion throughout the text.

While the book does a respectable job of introducing principles of leadership, I found its primary value in serving as a commentary on portions of the books of Acts and Corinthians. MacArthur is a skilled expositor and does deep research in the Scriptures. Thus he brings to light many situations and tidbits of information that helped me better understand these passages of the Bible and to understand Paul. Reading the book purely as a commentary will be rewarding in itself, with the principles of leadership serving as icing on the cake.

I have to admit I found this book a little disappointing, primarily because it was not entirely expository in nature. The twenty six principles of leadership are sound and will no doubt serve to strengthen many future and current leaders. In the final analysis, though, while they are proven from the life of Paul, they were not drawn explicitly from Scripture. Despite that, a man who exhibited those qualities would no doubt be an godly man and one well-suited and eminently qualfied for leadership in the church. I do recommend this book both as a commentary on parts of the life of Paul and as a guide to important qualities necessary for godly leadership.

Here is another example of why only two and not the third (True Colors) included in this hardcover book? Why isn't there a way to know this is coming so that an individual who wants to collect these books can get them in hardcover or know that paperback is the only way????? I think it is a way for publishers to make extra money and no, I don't think it is very funny. As for both books they are very good to read, but would have been better if they would have included number 3 (True Colors). The book arrived faster than I thought and in excellent condition and for that I am happy, but not for buying three paperbacks and then find it in hard cover and then not even including number 3!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Im sure this hardcover copy is great. I bought the order 66/true colors duo and it was great. I had already purchased them all in paperback but wanted hardback copies. I havent purchased the hard contact/triple zero edition yet but im sure its just as good. For the other review the reason this only came with 2 books was so that they could pair the other 2 together. Great books. Want to buy all of them.

These stories are amazing! If you like Star Wars you will like reading this collection. This book combines the first two books in what I believe is a 4 book set for Republic Commando. This collection is very hard to find in Hardback! Hardbacks were only available for a limited time. The quality is excellent. If you can get your hands on this collection it is worth it.

In many ways neonatology is synonymous with emergency. Many of us in the field chose neonatology because of the potential for complex, medically and ethically challenging scenarios to arise anytime we are called to the delivery room and the opportunity to care for critically ill newborns while working under intense time pressure in the neonatal intensive care unit. Neonatal Emergencies, edited by Georg Hansmann, MD, PhD, is a welcome addition to our field of medicine. One of the most unique and valuable aspects of this text is its focus on emergency and critical care of the newborn. Unlike other textbooks of neonatology that attempt to cover all aspects of neonatal care and because of this tend to become too unwieldy to serve as a source of rapidly accessible information, Neonatal Emergencies presents pertinent information in a concise, easy-to-read manner. Figures, tables and algorithms convey information clearly and succinctly. There are many examples of practical advice for the healthcare professional at the bedside including topics such as what questions to ask when on the phone with a colleague who wishes to refer a patient to you for transport and lists of appropriate procedures to perform, equipment to use and medications to deliver when caring for a sick neonate. Key points are emphasized by positioning in a box where the text is either preceded by an exclamation point or is shaded. Pertinent questions are also included so that the reader may perform a self-assessment after reviewing the material in a particular section or chapter.

The practical nature of the content of this text is also plainly evident in its emphasis on physical examination skills and what can be learned about the neonatal patient using one's eyes, ears and hands. Other important topics covered in the following pages but rarely found in other references include decision-making, training issues, and the importance of effective communication with fellow healthcare professionals (between and among the obstetric and neonatology team members) and with parents. Although not a comprehensive resource on the ethical challenges inherent in neonatal care this text does touch upon them in a sensitive and compassionate manner.

Simulation-based training is finding its way into the formal preparation and assessment of multidisciplinary teams of healthcare professionals charged with caring for newborns. Indeed the Neonatal Resuscitation Program (NRP) of the American Academy of Pediatrics will be evolving into a career-long learning program with simulation-based training at its core. In a way Neonatal Emergencies serves as a primer for those looking to develop realistic immersive scenarios for their training programs; thus its publication is timely, indeed.

Neonatal Emergencies presents an evidence-based approach to care of the critically ill newborn with contributions from an international panel of experts and supported by multiple contemporary references. It will serve as a readily accessible resource to a broad group of users including established pediatric/neonatal and obstetric physicians, anesthesiologists, nurses, nurse practitioners, midwives and transport specialists as well as trainees in these domains. Better than I expected

Having spoken with other people who'd studied optics before, their opinions of this book were mixed. Some who's opinions and study methods I really respected hated it, so I approached it with trepidation. But as I flicked through this 250-page book, I grew very fond of it. And I think you will too.

Well-formatted, full of diagrams, it contains just enough mathematical equations to be a little scary without being completely off-putting. The text is concise, if sometimes a little brief, explaining difficult concepts well. Those who did not enjoy it complained that the diagrams were contradictory and confusing - I disagree. Although some of the diagrams are complex, with a little attention and thought they can help to clarify the idea that just sits beyond comprehension through the text alone.

I liked it. If you're doing the Masters at Sydney Uni, it's a good choice.

"sweet and sour"

i'm sweet on the size and concise format of this book but i am also sour about the outdated nature of the material......it desperately needs an update. but worst of all is the plethora of misleading diagrams, really counterproductive in truth. still, texts on this subject matter are few and most avoid diagrams far more. the scope is broad but the bias is not towards current treatment and instrumentation.

I enjoyed this book so much. Not your typical "saint" book. The character and humanity of Mother Cabrini as well as her saintliness was wonderfully explored by Di Donato. I love all his books. This one in particular is a gem!

This was a wonderful biography that read like a novel. What a wise, brave, and loving woman Mother Cabrini was, helping immigrants in America at the turn of the century. Their conditions were deplorable and she brought them hope, along with schools, hospitals, and the Church. There are many thoughtful and beautifully expressed quotes of hers throughout. Highly recommend. Do not have to be religious to enjoy.

Possibly the most important book I've read in years. Read before any major life choice.

There's two books I wish I read when I was pre-pubescent. This and "What is Man". I sent the latter to my god-son and have a copy of both for myself. EVERYONE... yes EVERYONE should read this absolute gem. It is a short read in old english broken into 1-4 page chapters and sets principles I wish I framed all my life choices around. Whether you are a sincerely active religious person or someone contemplative, someone makink career and life choices, if you have not read this, you may not have all the puzzle pieces. Topics include pursuit of romance, wealth, fame, ... and puts them in a perspective that is highly challenging. I'm not mentioning the specifics because it's worth catching them in context. Short but worth many times over the purchase price.

Too little time? Life's too short? Across the millennia the richest man in Rome and one of the sanest philosophers you will meet across the ages offers advice to get more out of your limited time span.Seneca rightly observes that someone who wastes your time steals the most precious commodity you have - time lost can never be restored. He describes first century Rome as if it is today, you never have time for friends, or they for you. You don't get to see anybody without an appointment. Time flies. But then comes some of the most beautifully true words in the history of advice on the art of living: The great philosophers of the past always have time for you Plato, Aristotle, Epictetus, they are all at your disposal in the middle of the night. They are never too busy for you. Engage with them through their words. And as you read well into the past, you transcend the limitations of your own life, suddenly your own life stretches across the centuries. You gain longevity by living into the past, even if your future is limited! I came across this book of Seneca some ten years ago and I could never understand why it was never prescribed to us in academic philosophy! And then the potency of the insights are matched by the brevity of the writing. This book can rightly be called a source for a sane and inspirational life.
