Lack of communication, needs more depth in examples.

This book has a very clear, "lack of communication". The book is fine for the basics but the problem exercises do not involve the basics. The author explains problems from the beginning but goes straight to the end with the problem exercises. There needs to be more depth between the examples and the problems. This book is fine for some one who already knows it. But,if you don't and want to get confused and frustrated, then I recommend this book. If you are unfortunate and are forced to use this book, I would look for an outside source for reference. Beware!!! My question to the author is: Why are you keeping the middle a secret. This stuff is not as hard as the author makes it. To sum this up, the author says here is an elementary example now I want you to solve this advanced problem. Students need more examples with more depth. This book may be titled as introductory but it sure is geared for the more advanced.Thanks, but no thanks.

Needs more supplemental materials

We use this text as well as the accompanying lab manual in our introductory course (Intro to circuit analysis). For the most part this book is adequately laid out, with many topics covered as well as practical applications. What is lacking however, is in-depth explanations of the equations - that is, how/why they are using the numbers they are, especially the why. Perhaps a study guide and/or a solutions manual would be a good complement to the text itself.
This book assumes too many things, and being an introductory level book, more explanations are necessary.

AWESOME for Beginners, Best of the Best...

Circuit analysis is a very intense, math-oriented field. The objective is to be able to predict a voltage or current at ANY spot in a circuit, and be sure the circuit is efficient vs. the laws of electricity and electronics. LINEAR circuits can use techniques like complex numbers, substitution, simplification, etc., but NON LINEAR means you're getting into the most advanced math on the planet: Fourier transforms, matrix calculus, linear algebra, tensors, systems of inequality equations, and much more. Even a single semiconductor (eg. pn diode) makes the circuit nonlinear, as do time varying components, oscillators, etc., so-- tough subject.

That means that most Engineering, academic texts are out of the reach of many undergrads unless they got through linear algebra. LaPlace transforms, graph theory, wavelets, etc. are all ADVANCED topics. So, you get an electronics text instead, learn the basics, but really miss out on WHY the circuits are doing what they are doing. This is where this book shines! The author does an AMAZING job of covering real analysis without resorting to calculus hardly at all-- making the book PERFECT for hobbyists, self study, and electronics "techs."

In fact, he covers a LOT of basic electronics too-- you can really start with NO knowledge of the difference between a capacitor and resistor, and progress all the way through 555's, transistors, op-amps and all the rest! I review books for library purchasers and out of the 25 top electronics and analysis texts, I'd rate this #1 for self study/ beginners, in BOTH electronics and circuit analysis! Then, if you want to go farther, go ahead and explore the linear algebra/ Fourier etc. calculus based texts. I mean, even a charge moving past a point at time=t is a derivative, so this author does the almost impossible by not getting into integrals by page two! The truth is, a lot of real engineers (like me) use rules of thumb and shortcuts much more than we use dynamic systems of differential equations all day to check our designs! PSpice to the rescue-- and there is a LOT here!

For reference, I AM a circuit analyst at payroy dot com who evaluates circuits for uniqueness as well as ideal function, and still find this text outstanding for simplifying explanations without dumbing them down. After all, the truth is, we engineers SOLVE circuit analysis problems BY simplifying them-- making complex circuits simpler with analogies, piecewise linearization of non linears, nodal and mesh analysis, etc.! Work smarter, not harder.

Worthy of the Fellowship

This is a really great in depth look into the most bizarre album in the KISS catalog. Some fans love this album, some hate it. Musically it's the most diverse thing they ever did. But it was so out of the realm of what was expected from this band that it fell on deaf ears. There are some amazing interviews with all sorts of people who had a hand in the making, recording and promoting of this album. I personally enjoy this album very much but, at the time, I wish they didn't make it. It was the straw that broke the camels back for Ace Frehley and he left the band soon after. The book is filled with great stories that may have never been known to KISS fans before. It was an intriguing, tumultuous time in the bands history and this book covers it pretty well. My only complaint, and it's more of an observation, is that the band members themselves were not interviewed. An Ace Frehley interview solely about this album would have put this over the top for me. Gene & Paul would have been great but they say the same stuff over and over again anyway. Plus the Bob Ezrin interview desperately needed to be longer and more in depth. However it ends in classic Ezrin fashion. I would say you would need to be a fan of KISS to buy this book, not necessarily a fan of the album. If you were fan and alive through all this in 1981/82 then this book is a must have. It is the perfect companion to an album that was confusing as hell back then.

Love it and any KISS or Elder fan must have!

Awesome insight into a great album that unfortunately almost ended the KISS legacy. It was weird when it came out but if you listen to the songs in the intended order you get it and this even delves deeper. Maybe they will make a movie and do it right. It could use some updating but it might just work.

The work represents the author's research, consulting and professional experience in both universities and research centers spanning a period of over fifty years. About the Author
Lawrence Doctors graduated from The University of Sydney with a first-class honors bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering in 1965 and a Master of Engineering Science degree in 1967. He then studied Naval Architecture and Marine Engineering at the University of Michigan (UM) and received a doctorate in 1970. Since 1971, he has taught at The University of New South Wales (UNSW). He was Coordinator of the Naval Architecture Program for the Bachelor of Engineering degree at UNSW from 1985 to 2004. During his career, most of Professor Doctors' research efforts have been devoted to numerical ship hydrodynamics, where his interests are centered on the study of advanced marine vehicles. These include monohulls, catamarans, multihulls, air-cushion vehicles, surface-effect ships, planing boats, wing-in-ground-effect craft and hydrofoil boats. He has published over two hundred and twenty research papers and reports on these subjects. He reviews for more than twenty engineering journals and has been on the scientific or organizing committee for around forty international symposiums devoted to the theme of high-speed marine craft. The Featured Papers Committee of the Society of Naval Architects and Marine Engineers has on three occasions selected one of his publications as a Significant Paper. He has spent periods of research and sabbatical leave at the David W. Taylor Naval Ship Research and Development Center, Tel Aviv University, the UM, the Australian Maritime College, and the University of Strathclyde. His research has been sponsored principally by the Australian Research Council and the US Office of Naval Research.

This two volume set is the most comprehensive text available on hydrodynamics for the naval architect. It specializes on high-performance vehicles, but is certainly of relevant for all marine vessels. The text is impeccably organized. The writing and presentation is incredibly clear and the books are suitable for students, engineers, and researchers.

This is an outstanding work. It is comprehensive and readable. Prof. Doctors explains a tremendous amount of research history and extracts simple but profound insights from the work that has gone before. He provides an amazing list of references and citations (it will be like a candy list for aficionados!) His explanations and derivations of hydrodynamic theory are clear and readable. He then takes the theory and compares it to experiential data, whether scientific experiment or shipbuilding practice, and highlights the implications and lessons to be found in the science.

This work definitely belongs on the shelf of any serious practitioner in the field of high speed ship design.

An adequate book for beginners.

The problem with Life Insurance mathematics is that there are very few really good books on the topic. This book does little to alleviate this situation. Inspite of its title, "Fundamentals of Actuarial Mathematics" is essential a text book on Life Insurance mathematics. Of its 372 pages, 243 are devoted to Life Insurance mathematics (the remaining pages focussing on risk theory, in particular compound distributions, Markov chains, Poisson processes and ruin models, all of which are usually considered in the context of property and casualty or general insurance).

The explanations in the book are easy to understand and a reasonable number of worked examples and exercises are provided (with answers to the exercises given at the end of the book). However, at the same time, the explanations lack depth and the text book stops short of covering many of the more advanced topics in Actuarial Mathematics (such as increasing insurance policies and bonuses).

This is an adequate book for beginners and would be appropriate as a first text in Actuarial Mathematics. However, more advanced students are likely to find this book to be lacking.

Adequate, but full of errors

I must first admit this is a topic that I only have a mild interest in. The strengths of the book are that there are many worked examples, as well as proofs. There are also answers to most of the problems. The bad news is many of the answers are wrong. Newer printings have corrected many mistakes but a fair number remain. Before using this book download a .pdf file of the errata. You can find this by searching the key words Promislow & errata. The errata lists over 300 errors and is still not complete.

Good introduction to the topic

Before buying this book I had never had any exposure to actuarial mathematics. I was looking for a good introduction that would fit my mathematical skills (PhD Economist feeling comfortable with applied mathematics but lacking the training in mathematical to do proofs or anything similar). Promislow's book fully met my expectations and increased my interest for the subject. In fact I have purchased more books since.

It is true that the title is a little misleading as the book's primary topic is life insurance. However, there are three or four chapter dealing with risk theory providing a good introduction. What I found best in this book are the numerous exercises with answers in the back of the book. This allowed me to test my understanding of the subject and also what is important in each chapter. In some chapters it is not straightforward to see where the author is heading, however, the exercises compensated very well for this.

All in all I can warmly recommend this book to anyone who has a good background in mathematical economics at the level of Varian (Microeconomic Analysis) and who wants to get a good introduction into the topic.

I bought this book when I started to supervise a small telemarketing staff. I have been trying to dig nuggets of wisdom to share. How's this for a tip "Don't slur your speach" ? This book re-states the obvious and doesn't provide any insight.

So if I had read this book BEFORE my short career as a telemarketer things might have turned out differently. I would have known for example not to tell the screaming man just where to put his fork and knife. I mean, like, how was I to know he was eating dinner? Chill out.
