Exposes Gardner's Rhetoric

Pop psychology is full of odd claims. This book is full of it. OK, we'll start with the front cover; Tap into your natural genius. Do you feel like he's yanking on your chain already? Well, he makes a good effort of doing it throughout the book.

After doing some research it turns out that mind mapping is not original, but a copy of a more effective technique, called concept mapping, which was developed earlier than mind mapping. The same is true with Tony Buzan's concepts in this book. They are taken from Gardner's conjecture on multiple intelligences. It turns out that MI theory is actually just rhetoric. These intelligences are not defined, but also cannot be seperated out in tests. It takes the word "intelligent" and turns it into meaningless fluff. Of course, it fits in with Buzan's ideas of left/right brain (which turns out to be pure psuedoscientific myth), and does a further promotion job on the mind mapping concern.

The first chapter tries to persuade that creativity can be easily developed using mind mapping. This is another pure myth, because brainstorming, however useful, is only idea generation, and not creativity per se. He uses Richard Branson as an exemplar. I believe this to be quite a funny mistake.

He goes through each type of "seperate intelligence" and hurls pseudoscience about the field like the proverbial muck spreader.

The most memorable part is the section on sensual intelligence. Tony Buzan recommends masturbation for brain stimulation. I have images of him leading mass jerking seminars for those willing to depart with time and money for the promise of genius.

All this book really does is point out some of the more silly things that Gardner has proposed in his multiple intelligence theorizing. I'd say this book is ok if you want to blindly doze through some ego stroking, but if you go in with your eyes open its really not a pretty sight.

You May Be Smarter Than The Author!

I am a mind/concept/idea mapper. I acknowledge the contribution Mr. Buzan has made to promoting "mind maps" as an important and powerful learning and communications tool.

HEAD FIRST is a multi-million copy bestseller, so apparently pure fluff is in demand. HEAD FIRST is chock full of gee-whiz moments and "Did You Know?" tidbits for which (the paperback 2003 edition at least) has no citations. While pop-pulp readers may be quite comfortable digesting uncited material, HEAD FIRST just gets some things wrong: GALILEO was the first to see the moons of Jupiter, not DaVinci.

DID YOU KNOW? that tidbits without citations may well end up making you look like an idiot even if you are smarter than you think?

The purchase of HEAD FIRST will be money well-spent if you're in need of a mental pep talk. But buyer beware if you're expecting cognitive science.

Totally lame, but thats ok, its only pop psych

OK, the guy is unoriginal. Mind maps have been around for centuries in one form or another, and the actual chap who originated the modern mind map is Dr Allan Collins quite a few years before Buzan. And, yes Buzan used lots of spurious claims and pseudoscience that misleads the learner into using mind maps where they are completely the wrong choice, and teaches people science that has been debunked for decades.

But somebody's gotta do it!

About the Author
Dr. Richard Ing is the senior pastor of Light of the World Missions in Hawaii and the Philippines. He holds a Doctor of Ministry degree and is vice president of New Covenant International Seminary and Bible College. Dr. Ing also operates a Bible college, mission house, and vocational training center in the Philippines. He has lectured frequently on spiritual warfare in Fiji, Vanuatu, India, mainland China, Hong Kong, Singapore, Sarawak, Bulgaria, and the Philippines, as well as the US mainland.

Dr. Ing was a civil engineer before graduating from Hastings College of the Law in San Francisco. He recently retired from law practice after forty years. Married for more than forty years, Dr. Ing has four children and resides in Hawaii, where he was born and raised.

A Must Read

I think this is a MUST READ for everyone. It brings to light the workings of Satan and his demons and how God provides us (with the help of His Mighty Angels) to battle these threats to our eternal souls. Yes Dr. Ing does speak quite a bit about the Pacific Rim area but these threats are ever present no matter where you live... I believe he (Dr. Ing) speaks of the areas where He has had "hands on" work with people affected by the demonic powers. This book had brought me a better understanding of some of the "impulse" feelings I have experienced in the past and a better understanding of how to deal with them.

The author moves from campus protests at the University of Washington in the spring of 1968, to Peace Corps training in Utah and the Navajo Nation in New Mexico, to living and teaching in an isolated village in Libya, to a European summer vacation, to the revolution that led to charges that Peace Corps volunteers were CIA agents, to returning to the U.S. in October, 1969, to witness the anti-war moratorium on the Capital Mall in Washington, D.C. The heart of the story is the author's own evolving journey as a teacher, during which time he began to question both the official curriculum of English instruction and the broader purposes of teaching for liberation. This is also a story about the author's education and re-education in Libya as he struggles to learn the rules of everyday life (including the rules of gender and sexuality) as a stranger in the village, and as he begins to see and appreciate the world through somewhat different eyes. Part of his education involved a reconstruction of the history of the village in terms of wave after wave off European colonizers----from the time of the Romans, to the Italian fascist colonizers, to the liberation of the village by the British chasing Rommel's troops across the desert, to its decline, renaming, and reappropriation as an Arab village. The author brings all this up to the late 1960s by describing the role of U.S. foreign policy in the "development" of Libya in league with global oil, and with the support of the largest air base outside the continental U.S. near Tripoli. This is, finally a coming of age story--about a young man who was desperately looking for something to believe in and live for, and more pragmatically looking for a way out of the draft and Vietnam, and out of an America that seemed to be slipping into collective madness. It is a story (like all coming of age stories) about setting off on a great youthful journey of self-discovery, and a rekindling of the human spirit. Audiences for this book include: college students (undergraduate and graduate) in education, cultural studies, and Arabic studies; former Peace Corps volunteers and those interested in the Peace Corps and its history; readers interested in recent developments in Libya looking for some historical perspective on how Gaddafi came to power and why the revolution turned anti-American; and all those interested in a first-hand account of what America was like at the end of a decade ushered in with Kennedy idealism and the Peace Corps. Wow! A well-written math textbook!

I hate math. Always have. Have always had weak math grades. I took the Penn State course, "The Math of Money" because I figured it would at least have practical application. And wouldn't you know it, I never had a lousy professor until at PSU until I took that class. This textbook was my savior! It is extremely well-written, easy to follow, and yes - you can actually use the material daily! I sat through only half an excrutiating lecture that semester, the book guided me through the rest. Got an easy B.

My only complaint is the book has no index, which is inconvenient. Otherwise, amazing.

About the Author

Frank M. Carrano is a professor emeritus of computer science at the University of Rhode Island. He received the Ph.D. degree in computer science from Syracuse University in 1969. His interests include data structures, computer science education, social issues in computing, and numerical computation. Professor Carrano is particularly interested in the design and delivery of undergraduate courses in computer science. He has authored several well-known computer science textbooks for undergraduates.

Good book.

I like how the book reads and the information is pretty useful. I am using the book for a course I am taking at the university. Only issue I have is with the Kindle version I purchased. It is hard to read because you can only zoom in and out. You cannot increase the font size as you can with Kindle novels. This is the first Kindle "textbook" I have purchased, and will probably avoid them in the future because of the font size issue.

Not for neophytes.

This is a book on how to properly, abstractly, sort, store and compartmentalize data in C++. I found that this book accomplished this reasonably well.

But, you need to understand C++. You will need to already understand pointers, copy contructors, exceptions, etc. I found the "interlude" sections, that are there to reacquaint the student, unhelpful.
