Ian Myles Slater on: A Worthwhile Edition (Well, Perhaps Not For All Readers)
By Ian M. Slater
A reviewer can propose, but only Amazon disposes.

Way back in 2004, I was unable to review the then-new Norton Critical Edition of "Le Morte Darthur" (Winchester MS version -- see below) because I had already posted a review of the Penguin English Library/Penguin Classics edition (Caxton's text).

In the end, I wound up discussing Shepherd's treatment in a review of the Oxford Standard Authors edition, edited by Eugene Vinaver under the idiosyncratic title of "Malory: Complete Works."

Now that the NCE (Norton Critical Edition) has its own page, I've decided to slightly modify that combined review, and post it where I originally wanted it to go.

This is mainly a review of two old-spelling complete editions of the work commonly known as "Le Morte D'Arthur" (Anglo-Norman French for "The Death of [King] Arthur}), both available in paperback. The language they are in can be called either very late Middle English, or very early Modern English; other, easier-to-read, editions will also be mentioned below.

For those who are already familiar with the "Morte" from modernized-spelling popular editions, and the existence of two sources for a "definitive" text, and are looking for a more scholarly, but affordable, edition, here is the short view of the situation:

The sole choice used to be Eugene Vinaver's "Malory: Complete Works," in the Oxford Standard Authors series (from Oxford University Press; the title will be explained shortly). Available since 1971, it is in (rather small) plain type, with no special features on the page except some marginal notations, and the occasional footnote.

S.H.A. Shepherd's Norton Critical Edition, from 2004, with the cover title of "Le Morte Darthur," has a text with a striking visual difference from the usual modern book; following the lead of the manuscript, proper names appear in a bold "black letter" font (instead of red ink -- see below). This may be intimidating at first glance, and some may hastily conclude it is too difficult to read. However, one can adjust quite quickly and I have found the basic text, in Fairfield Modern, easier on the eyes than the Oxford version. (I would have welcomed it a couple of decades ago, when I was reading the Oxford edition cover-to-cover while waiting around on jury duty.)

The following is aimed partly at those unfamiliar with the situation -- my apologies to those who find themselves plowing through the obvious.

Until a mis-catalogued fifteenth-century manuscript in a safe at Winchester College was finally recognized in 1934 as Sir Thomas Malory's account of King Arthur and his knights, the only authoritative text of this now-famous work was that found in the two surviving copies of William Caxton's 1485 printing. Unhappily, its first and last pages are missing, so Caxton remains the source for those passages. (The standard exact, or "diplomatic," text of Caxton's Malory was edited by H. Oskar Sommer, 1889-1891. There is a recent critical text, edited by James Spisak, 1983, and a facsimile edition, edited by Paul Needham, 1976.) There are thousands of minor differences, and a few very large ones.

Caxton had divided the text into twenty-one books, with numbered and (usually) titled chapters, and called the whole "Le Morte D'Arthur" -- "Notwithstanding that it treateth of the birth, life, and acts of the said King Arthur, of his noble knights of the Round Table, their marvelous enquests and adventures, the achieving of the Sangrail, and in the end the dolorous death and departing out of this world of them all" (Caxton's Colophon). He had also dramatically abridged one long section (his Book Five), and seems to have made some changes of his own in wording, at times softening Malory's aristocratic bluntness.

When Eugene Vinaver edited the Winchester Manuscript for the Oxford English Texts series, he gave the three-volume set (with critical notes, glossary, etc.) the title of "The Works of Sir Thomas Malory" (1947; revised edition, 1967; third edition, re-edited by P.J.C. Field, 1990).

In Vinaver's eyes, the manuscript revealed that Malory had produced only a very loosely connected set of narratives, distinct "WORKS" to which he, as editor, gave his own titles (which are now in current use, despite the lack of any other authority for some).

The idea that it was a single, continuous, narrative was, in this view, Caxton's; hence the many inconsistencies, such as dead villains showing up alive and still wicked after a few "books." This reversed the view of others who, noting the lack of unity in other publications by Caxton, had attributed the difference entirely to Malory.

This decision has given rise to a long critical controversy; Malory was, in Caxton's term, "reducing" some disparate French texts into English, and may have just missed some discrepancies, as he tried to produce a reasonably unified "whole book". It has also created a certain amount of bibliographic confusion.

Keith Baines' "Rendition in Modern English" of Vinaver's edition (1962; a rewriting, covering every incident, but mostly sacrificing the language) is carefully called "Malory's Le Morte D'Arthur: King Arthur and the Legends of the Round Table," as if to emphasize that Caxton's "interference" is being removed, without sacrificing reader recognition (and sales). Vinaver's later Oxford Standard Authors one-volume original-spelling text edition (1971), however, is "Malory: Complete Works."

Vinaver also edited for Oxford University Press a modernized-spelling "King Arthur and His Knights: Selected Tales by Sir Thomas Malory" (1956, 1968, 1975), which maintained the same premise. John Steinbeck, a great admirer of Malory, was delighted by Vinaver's edition, and referenced the Winchester Manuscript in the subtitle of his unfinished "Acts of King Arthur ...," avoiding the "Morte" designation. (This is in fact an Arthurian novel by Steinbeck, incorporating chunks of source material, *not* a modernization.) Thus far, there is a certain amount of consistency.

However, a more recent Oxford edition, Helen Cooper's modernized spelling edition of the Winchester text for The Oxford World's Classics (1998; abridged, unfortunately; otherwise excellent), is instead titled "Le Morte D'Arthur." So, too, is the medievalist R.M. Lumiansky's much more extensively modernized 1982 complete version of the Winchester text. (Almost a translation, and thus an implied commentary on the text; but not to be confused with Lumiansky's projected, and unpublished, critical edition, almost complete at the time of his death in 1987. But is quite impressive, and I can understand anyone who thinks I am too critical of it.)

The title of the facsimile edition for the Early English Text Society (N.R. Ker, 1976) "The Winchester Malory," avoided the issue, but the volume also helped renew the debate over Vinaver's theory by eliminating his editorial hand, revealing that some of the textual divisions were NOT Caxton's work, but that of either a scribe or the author.

Stephen H. A. Shepherd's Norton Critical Edition is "Le Morte DArthur" on the cover, but on the title page has the Caxton-derived subtitle of "The Hoole Book of Kyng Arthur and of His Noble Knyghtes of The Rounde Table." This title may well go back to Malory, or least to the manuscripts; it would have appeared on the missing final pages. Shepherd, indeed, gives considerably more weight to Caxton's evidence than had become customary. It has become clear, from printer's marks, that the Winchester Manuscript was in fact available to Caxton, and was still on hand when his successor, Wynkyn de Worde, reset the "Morte" in 1498, introducing some of its readings.

This fact suggests that Caxton was comparing at least two full-length manuscripts, and that some of his "innovations" may reflect Malory's intentions as much as any other scribal copy.

The one-volume Oxford "Malory: Complete Works" is a rather bare-bones edition (especially compared to its three-volume prototype), consisting almost entirely of a very lightly "normalized" text (abbreviations are silently expanded, but variant spellings are usually preserved, etc.), with some good textual notes and a glossary (about a hundred pages of "apparatus").

In the Norton Critical Edition, Shepherd offers the reader an extended Introduction, Chronologies, a text with explanatory footnotes, a large section of "Sources" (earlier and / or alternative versions of Arthurian stories, many translated by Shepherd) and "Backgrounds" (contemporary medieval documents and modern histories illustrating Malory's times) and "Criticism" (essays and book excerpts), followed by a thirty-two-page double-column Glossary, a "Selected Guide to Proper Names," and a Selected Bibliography. He has a helpful section on Malory's language, covering not only grammatical differences from Modern English, but how it was pronounced (with encouragement to try reading it aloud, noting that Malory seems to have been a dangerously glib speaker.)

(Originally, there was also a website for the book, accessible through W.W. Norton's main page; among other useful features, it reported printing errors, and later announced that the corrections of those identified had been made in the second printing.)

Shepherd's text itself includes more of Caxton's readings, which seem to reflect another manuscript with different errors; and *manuscript* is the crucial word. Unlike Vinaver, who attempted to reproduce what he regarded as Malory's intended structure (or non-structure), Shepherd aims to create the impression of reading a medieval manuscript, without the most difficult obstacles. Not only are original spellings preserved, he carefully includes marginal notes and other indicators of scribal practices. The two scribes of the Winchester Manuscript carefully (but not completely consistently) wrote names, and some passages, in red ink ("rubrications"). Shepherd does not ask the printer for two colors, but follows the practice of "Scribe A" in using a more ornate script for the rubrics, substituting a black-letter font [Cloister Black], so these words stand out; in some cases, following the scribes' use of larger lettering, they are printed in an extra-bold face.

Shepherd has some sensible solutions -- not identical to Vinaver's -- to such problems as character variation ('u' and 'v' and 'i' and 'j' had yet to settle into their modern restrictions, for example), erratic word divisions, and punctuating sentences whose beginning and / or end is not clearly marked. [The review by Jim Allan elegantly summarizes Shepherd's approach to these and other problems.]

This does not make for easier reading; it does reproduce, as nearly as possible in a printed book, and with modern typefaces, the experience of reading a medieval book -- which is the point of the exercise. As someone who once pored over the facsimile of the Winchester Manuscript without being able to make out much from the fifteenth-century handwriting, I love it. And it is not Shepherd's eccentric decision. It is part of a renewed appreciation for the medieval book as a physical artifact, not a sort of nuisance to be made transparent by modern typography.

However, with their 'olde spellynges' and other peculiarities, neither the Oxford Standard Authors version nor the Norton Critical Edition is suitable for all readers. Although Lumiansky's version comes close, there is still a need for a *complete* "normalized" edition based on the Winchester text, only very lightly modernized as to spelling, and faithfully preserving the original words and sentence structures.

[Note, February 2015: There is a new critical edition of Malory, edited by P.J.C. Field, published in two volumes by D.S. Brewer, as volume 80 in the "Arthurian Studies" series ("Sir Thomas Malory: Le Morte Darthur," Cambridge, 2013). It is based on both the Caxton and Winchester texts, and attempts to arrive at a state of the text closer to Malory's own than either example. This (expensive) edition has been reviewed by Kenneth Hodges for the on-line "The Medieval Review" (The Medieval Review 15.02.03)]

[Addendum, December 2015: There is now a dual-text edition of the Caxton and Winchester editions available for Kindle: “Complete Works of Sir Thomas Malory,” from Delphi Classics (Series Five Book 1). I’ve reviewed it: in brief, it consists of Pollard’s 1903 modernized text of the Caxton edition, with his glossary (but not his character index), and, from an unspecified source, an old-spelling edition of the Winchester Manuscript. I have noticed that the latter has errors on the order of “Qur” for “our,” but does’t seem, on first inspection, to be *too* badly corrupted. (I may be wrong about this….)

[The Delphi edition is an inexpensive way for anyone interested in the “Morte D’Arthur” to get a good look at both versions. Unfortunately, while the Pollard text has hyperlinks to Caxton’s book and chapter divisions, there is no equivalent for the longer Winchester Manuscript, nor is there any cross-referencing between matching passages. For the Winchester text, at least, the intrigued reader may well then decide to try the Norton Critical Edition, Vinaver’s “Malory: Complete Works,” or the solid, but abridged, version edited by Helen Cooper for the Oxford World’s Classics series, as “Le Morte Darthur: The Winchester Manuscript.”]

[Addendum, December 9, 2015: Vinaver’s approach to the unity of the "Morte" is now taken for granted by some. On December 7, 2015, BBC Culture, in explaining the basis of a list of “the 100 greatest British novels,” specifically classed “Morte D’Arthur” as a short story collection. Leaving aside the different question of whether Medieval romances meet one’s definition of “a novel,” many of the eight “Tales” into which Vinaver divided the text are more like short — or longer — novels than they are like short stories. In the Norton Critical Edition, “The Tale of Sir Tristams de Lyones” runs to over 250 pages — and does not contain the full story, at that. (Of course, it too can be broken down into shorter "tales" as the focus of the narrative shifts.)]

but I am very glad to have it
By Chris Booth
This is not the most readable edition of Malory, but I am very glad to have it. It is a very careful, scholarly edition, and...well...Malory is Malory. You can't go wrong with this excellent edition.

If you have not yet read Le Morte Darthur, this is a good edition to choose. It gives a flavor of the age in which the book was written than a more modernized edition might, and Le Morte Darthur is one of the most fundamental works in English-language literature. Malory was one of the great story-tellers, and in his retelling of the Arthurian tales there is much delight and pathos. If the English language has a foundational epic, this is it.

Engrossing! Worth the effort it took to read! Excellent!!!
By John Rossi
Where do I begin? Watching the film Excalibur inspired me to try to track down this book. I found out shortly after that day of this edition. Boy am I glad I did. The illustrations, whether in color or black and white are absolutely beautiful and vivid. They transport you expertly in your mind to the place being depicted in the image. When I first opened this book I was reminded in a way of reading Scripture almost. This is VERY old English folks, but PLEASE do not let that deter you. It only takes a little while to get used to the wording and you can soon begin to appreciate the "flavor" of, and get lost in the world of this book. To me this is the quintessential story of ideals, one man's dream as he wanted to affect the world for the better, and the problems, trials, and triumphs in his trying to make that dream a reality. It has EVERYTHING. Chivalry, love, honor, family, friendship, conflict, malice, trust, betrayal, and spice too. There is something in here that will surely delight everyone. Just give yourself time to get used to the wording of the text. A glossary is provided for this purpose in the back of the book as well. I loved this text partly BECAUSE of the way it was written, it did not "modernize" or "dumb down" the words. The "flavor" is ancient, noble-sounding, and captivating. It MADE me want to slow down and actually READ this thing, to ABSORB the text and story, the world and the people that live in it. If STAR WARS is a trip to a galaxy far far away, this is a voyage to a past rich in ideals, ideas, and passions of the human heart and soul that seem to have grown either cold, taken for granted, or simply and quite sadly, forgotten in this modern age.
Again...please do NOT be turned off by the archaic writing style. Kick back, open the book, and let it carry you away to a world of romance, beauty, adventure, and passion that has seldom, if ever been equalled in our time. I fell in love with this work, and I think you will too... it can put a spell on you... and draw you into a world that you may wish you never had to leave. Even when you close the book, the allure and beauty and romance of this work just may stay imprinted on your heart forever.

Easy Way is Amazing!
By L.A. Lady
I found this book exactly two years ago and will be forever grateful that I did. I am a professional with a career, a wife, a mom, a good friend. But I had a big problem. I was trying to control my drinking, and yet would inevitbably end up drinking more. I felt awful, guilty, out of control. I tried a few self help methods, but wasn't ready to check into rehab or an AA group. Serendiptously I found Allen Carr's book. I read it, followed it, and stopped cold. It was "easy" in that once I read the book I knew I wouldn't go back, and that I had a tool to refer to when I felt a little shakey at the beginning. But once I had that last drink I was DONE. The book gives you the tools you need to stop and to actually feel great about it.

"Easy Way" is not a literary masterpiece, and it's not your typical addiction book. However, it's roots are solidly planted in cognitive-behavioral psychology, with lots of common sense ideas sprinkled in. It may not be high-brow, but it makes so much sense.

After I stopped drinking, I began to look around at how alcohol and other drugs are viewed and used, as Carr suggests. He states that alcohol is really the last socially acceptable drug, and that even the most casual and responsible drinker is dependent. I started observing my friends, acquaintances and strangers after reading the book, and realized how true this is, as you will if you are willing to look. I've noticed how friends who have to give up alcohol for even a short time miss it terribly. If they are stressed they can't wait to have a drink. This is no accident, but a consequence of using a drug. These are people who don't drink daily, rarely drink more than one or two drinks, and usually have alcohol with meals or socially.

I have no problem being with others who drink, going to bars or clubs if I feel like it (though I seldom do), and it's so liberating. In fact, one of Carr's important points is that once you quit with his method there is no reason to avoid friends and loved ones who drink. This is the case for me and is one of the things I really am amazed at. AA and other programs are adament that once you are an alcoholic, you are always an alcoholic; that you are always at risk. Carr begs to differ. Once I realized what alcohol is and what it does to the body, I would never go back.

Since finding "Easy Way" I have gotten the greatest compliment of my life. I was at a dinner with some friends and their kids. One of the kids said "... You are high on life, everyone else is high on their drinks!". I am so glad my happiness shows so clearly.

Finally, I have a teenager and am now able to engage him in conversations about drugs (alcohol, pot, smoking etc.), and I feel I have a real chance of innoculating him against the pressures in our society to use and abuse drugs. Many parents I talk to think that learning to drink responsibly is a good idea, and that it would be strange if their kids didn't experiment. After reading "Easy Way" my message to my child is that alcohol is a drug, and once you try it, it pulls you in gradually and imperceptibly as do all drugs. AND IF YOU DON'T DRINK, YOU CAN'T HAVE A PROBLEM WITH ALCOHOL.

My one concern is that perhaps additional assistance would be necessary with a multiple drug habit. And certainly there is no problem getting help from a program. But I swear by "Easy Way"! But I hope if you are having a problem you'll try this book.

April 2013 - Just went to Amazon to buy this book for a loved one with a drinking problem and looked at the reviews. I forgot I had written this in 2008, and it is 5 years later. So here's the update: I am still happily free of alcohol cravings and haven't had a drink in seven years. Every now and again I pull out my copy of "Easy Way" to review it. Alan Carr's method has worked like a charm form me. I will never go back, and am profoundly grateful that I found this amazing book all those years ago.

Thank you Mr. Carr!

Update 1-15-15: Still happily sober, and still so grateful to Mr. Carr and his book. Don't wait, read this one!

Changed my life forever

*****Update March 4, 2012******
I am now 15 weeks drink free. I find I no longer need the book close. Every so often the goblin Carr spoke of appears and tells me I want a drink. I am now able to acknowledge the thought of a drink and then quickly move past it. Carr's method works for me. I no longer think of myself as a person who used to drink. I am now a person that does not drink and the idea of my drinking past no longer has much meaning. I know I am never going back to that place. Thank you Mr Carr.

*****Update October 2 2011********
Since July I have not wanted a drink and have abstained without issue, but this past week I traveled for a new job. I was away from home and feeling overwhelmed by the new job. To make things worse, the group I work with go out for drinks after work. It was hard. I wanted a drink to allow me to check out of this reality and to make matters worse I have to be around it in a bar. Luckily, I have brought a copy of Allen's book with me. I went back to my hotel room and read the parts that I had marked. Yes, I travel with the book. I felt like I was on the willpower method since I felt like I was deprived. All it took was a quick re-read of the sections on how drinking has not benefits. Once I was reminded, I was back on track. I decided to add this to my comments as I am a firm believer that re-reads are needed so one is reminded often as to the fact that there are no benefits to drinking. None. Society and people who drink will try to convince me otherwise. With Allen Carr's words close at hand and my willingness to read them often, I can say with great happiness, that I am only three months from being a year without a drink!!!! Oh and I wanted to add, since I have not been drinking for 9 months, I have saved lots of money that I would have been spending on drinking. Because I am not hung over, I exercise more and eat less since my inhibitions are not lowered (I know when to stop eating). I have lost 25 pounds. I have my high school weight back!! I never expected to be this healthy. I have not idea it was even possible. But I want to add, that even if I had not lost an ounce, I would be much happier being out of the prison. The weight loss is icing on the cake.

**** Update July 2011 *****
Strange thing happened. For the first time in seven months since I had my last drink, I wanted one badly. I cannot explain why, but I felt deprived that I could not have a drink. I all of sudden felt that willpower was thing keeping me from drinking. Willpower not being the Easy Way, I went back to my copy of the book that had marked sections that spoke to me seven months ago. After the first read, I was reminded as to why I stopped drinking and what would happen if I started back. I feel grounded again. The urge to drink is completely gone. Allen Carr came to my rescue again.

**** Update June 2011 *****
I am now 6 months drink free. I have the book close by if I need it, but never once have I felt I did. Carr's message is still with me and I have no desire to drink. My life has changed in ways I never thought possible. I am an athlete again, my relationships are better, my mind is clear. I will always be grateful to Carr and his message.

What makes a person an "addict"? Don't know. What I do know is that I am a 42 year old woman who started drinking at 14. Over the past 3 decades my drinking progressed to the point that I drank every single day, I planned my life around drinking, and got to a place where I was completely miserable and did not think I would ever get out. Then in January 2011, Atlanta was snowed in and no one could go anywhere for a week. The night before I had a wonderful blessing of being at a book store and seeing Allen Carr's book. It looked like a silly title, but something in my head said get it. I did and the next week I sat in my chair and read the book 3 times. I cannot articulate the change that came over me. It has been the most profound experience I have had in my life. It has been 3 months and I have not even wanted to have a drink. My life has completely transformed. I had no idea what I was missing. I know I will never ever go back to that life and I have Allen Carr to thank for that.

*****Update January 2013 ******
Still drink free. Still do not want one. This is a big month. This marks two years.

It worked for me!
By Perpetua
I'm surprised I haven't come online to Amazon.com sooner to enter a review of this book. I read through the book, one chapter per day, back in July, 2008. On July 31st (2008) I finished the book while smoking my last cigarette and drinking my last glass of whiskey. Yes, reading the book helped me quit BOTH vices - cold turkey - no regrets.

The Book:
I found parts of the book to be a bit on the cheesy side (pitcher plant, though it makes sense after-the-fact), but others I found eye-opening (marketing strategies of liquor companies). I approached the book with a positive attitude and learned early into the book that by reading one chapter at a time I was allowing the information to sink in. I also highlighted sentences here and there - folding down the corners of the pages - of those statements I found overly helpful so I could go back and re-read them to keep the motivation going. As I was still drinking (and smoking) when I started the book I followed Mr. Carr's instructions and kept drinking (and smoking) until the end of the book. I will admit that the taste of both vices became worse as I made my way through the book and found myself looking forward to when I could truly stop.

After the Book:
It's been over three years and I am still liquor and cigarette-free. I've never calculated my financial savings though I'm sure it would be an interesting perk. I will admit that the habit of sitting in front of the television watching mindless reality shows while drinking (and smoking) away the bad day sounds appealing more often than not, but I also know how many times I had tried to stop drinking before (sometimes successful for even months at a time) and know now that if I have "just one" (of either vice), that would be it - I'd be off the wagon... again. So, I know I can't indulge in "just one".

Side note:
I lost my brother to the bottle (well, to his own hand, after he indulged in the bottle) earlier this year. I am much more familiar with the deeper problems of alcoholism than the average person. I truly know the damage it can do.

Alcohol is, as the book states, a toxic poison that shouldn't be ingested by any living thing. If you have one drink, you'll have another - maybe not the same night or even the same week or month - but you'll have one. Either you're a drinker or you're not. If you are a drinker you are that much closer to falling down permanently (if you haven't already, like my brother).

I chose not to be a drinker anymore and, with the help of this book, have been dry ever since. I have no children so it's safe for me to say that this was without a doubt the greatest accomplishment of my life. I am very proud of myself and, so far, smart enough not to take it for granted. I know that I'll slide right down that pitcher plant if I do try to have "just one" somewhere in the future. I have a completely different perspective now - I feel like I know more than everyone else as to why people drink (and why they shouldn't).

My unsolicited advice to you - the reader of this review:
You are (most likely) reading this review because you drink but don't want to and hope this book is the answer. It very well can be as I am living proof. Know you want to quit without any reservation or hesitation then read this book - a little every day until you've finished it - and read it like you mean it. Follow every instruction. If you have to read it two or three times, then do so. You won't regret it. I wish you the very best of luck and urge you to keep trying until you've succeeded!

****UPDATE: June 22, 2013****
July 31, 2013 I will be FIVE YEARS without a drink (or cigarette). Today I read an article on WSJ.com about women drinkers. While I found the article interesting and full of analyzed research, I was disappointed by the promising remedies that were mentioned: A couple of prescription meds that reduce cravings and/or a week-long, $8700 in-patient psychiatric seminar. For a few dollars and a week in your own recliner you WILL get the same results if you are smart enough to read this book and trust the 100+ 5-star reviews here on Amazon. I mean it. This is the real deal. Just make sure you WANT it.

I never gave my background before - here it goes:
I started having my daily drinks around 1994. I had moved from SoCal to the Phoenix area and was sampling all the beers at Trader Joe's. I had two or three beers a day; more on the weekends. By 1996 this transitioned to mostly wine. Boxed wine, which was all I could afford in the quantities I consumed. In 1998 my weekday boxed wine binges continued (many a night I'd vomit from how much I drank). I mixed wine and champagne on the weekends when I started having "girls nights" with a friend of mine. We didn't go to clubs like others, we stayed in, drank away the night listening to Neil Young and told stories of our childhoods, past loves, etc. I married in 2000, divorced in 2001, moved to Colorado in 2002 and started dating a martini drinker (well, just straight gin from the freezer). It took a few, but that became my new weekend drink. In the two years we dated I learned to try many spirits and found Irish whiskey to be my favorite. My weekday wine binges still existed but were declining as I swapped wine for whiskey. I drank from when I arrived home after work to when I could barely make it to bed. I never slept, only passed out. I even injured myself a few times, breaking toes and ribs. Once I had a co-worker wave his hand in between us and, as he leaned back he said with a look of disgust, "Whew! What the hell? Do you keep a flask in your desk or something?" This was about 9:30 in the morning.

I drank every night and, during the weekends, during the day, too; seven days per week. This had been going on for YEARS. It wasn't the co-worker's comment that made me want to quit drinking, it was that I wanted to go to college. I knew I couldn't keep one lifestyle while starting another. I knew I had to quit the bottle in order to successfully hit the books. Before my fall semester started I made THIS book my first book to "hit" after having read about another person's success with it. Her words of wisdom: Read it slowly, thoroughly and completely. Don't think you're smarter than the book. Don't laugh at it and assume you know more. There was a bit more to her comments, but those were the most important.

Read this book. I don't care where you buy it or if you check it out from your local library (which I did), just read it. Hopefully you too will be editing a positive review on Amazon five years later to let others know that it is possible to change your life. I was a daily binge drinker for 14 years and quit cold turkey after having finished this book. Five years later I still have no regrets and am so much STRONGER. I don't want to ever be that person again and I know having just one drink will put me back in a position to fall down again.

By the way, I completed my college degree in August 2011. I worked full-time too! Since then I've had to try new things. I didn't know what to do with my free time - I'd either been drinking or studying throughout my entire adulthood. Now I walk, jog, bike, hike, snowshoe, paddle board, kayak, read, sew, garden - all with friends, family or even by myself - nothing is ever hidden or causes me self pity or shame. What are you waiting for? Figure out what you want to do with life, the possibilities are truly endless. Embrace your new journey. It will be a much better one; I promise!

****UPDATE: July 21, 2015****

In 10 days I will be 7 years free of the toxic, poisonous marketing ploy our society calls "liquor". Thanks to those who read and comment on or find my review helpful. I've just re-read my review and realized there were a couple of updates to share.

FIRST: I don't know when it happened, but it did - I no longer have any desire whatsoever to have a mindless night in front of the television with a cocktail. The idea that it used to sound "fun" is horrific to me. I am completely, proudly, without-turning-back a teetotaler. I've never felt more free. I can say, without any doubt, that I will GLADLY never have a drink again. I've passed the point of thinking about wanting it again "someday". The only time I think about it is when others mention it, which brings me to my second comment.

SECOND: My heart breaks often at how many people think drinking is for a good time or to get through a bad situation. Everyone talks about drinking. All the time. Some more than others. I'm still speechless in many circumstances because I know others aren't ready for me to get on a soapbox and start preaching to them. What warms my heart is when someone finds hope or even just an idea of potential hope in my story.

I am an Amazon Prime member. I write a lot of reviews here. This book is the only product I've ever given more than a paragraph or two. I didn't even buy the book on Amazon. I didn't even BUY the book - I checked it out at the library! All I know is that Mr. Allen Carr in his creative writing saved my life. I hope you will give him the chance to save yours, too. The time and money you'll save/gain and even the marital strife when one quits and the other doesn't - it's ALL WORTH IT. Stop drinking. You know you want to or you wouldn't have read this far. If I can do it, anyone can. Do you have even one truly good, valid reason why you shouldn't quit? No? Great. Start reading! Practice what the book teaches. Think about what Carr says. Keep at it every day - just one short chapter a day. You WILL succeed if you WANT to. I AM SEVEN YEARS IN AND HAVEN'T LOOKED BACK. Not one regret. Ever. Good luck to you!!!!

Rogue: Wolves of Angels Rest #3, by Elsa Jade

The mating moon is full...

Rafael Villalobos is a werewolf without his wolf. The beast is rogue, gone hunting without him, making Rafe even more of a menace to his pack than the wolf hunters who hate them. He doesn’t know what the wolf wants…until it leads him straight to the sassy, luscious Darling Rowan.

Bitten by a rogue wolf that may or may not have been the sexiest Villalobos boy, Dare knows her quiet days as the county librarian are coming to an end. She’ll be coming too, if she can just get a certain stubborn man to admit that the simmering heat between them is more than the mating moon.

This series just keeps getting better and better. I can't wait for the next one, and happily, there is a next one. I love it.
By SFF Dragon
'Rogue' is the third book in the Wolves of Angels Rest series by Elsa Jade as well as the fifteenth book in the multi-author Mating Season Collection of short stand alone paranormal romances. I was given this copy by the author in exchange for an honest review.

Werewolf Raphael Villalobos is a seriously troubled soul. He's appeared in both of the previous books, so if you've read them, you'll already know his history, and if you haven't, there's enough background in this one that it won't feel like you've missed out. The man has given up trying and has descended into a level of bitterness for all he thinks he's lost that he's almost beyond saving. He believes he lost everything worth having when his parents were murdered by human Hunters, and because he was too young to take over from his father, the Alpha position he was destined for was taken by his uncle and now his cousin, Kane. The wolf is a very different story. It knows it has something much more important and precious waiting to be found and refuses to give up looking for his true mate. If the man won't take notice, the wolf will go it alone leaving Rafe with no idea what he does or what happens to him when he's in wolf form. His wolf won't talk to him or connect to him in any way... It's gone rogue.

Darling or more often called Dare, is the County Librarian and Clerk and she has always thought Rafe Villalobos was the sexiest thing on two legs. On four legs he's downright scary, but she wants him anyway. And when she's bitten by a rogue wolf, Rafe has no idea if it was him or the stranger being used by the hunters known as the Kingdom Guard. Dare doesn't know either as both wolves look the same, but she seizes the opportunity it offers with both hands and refuses to let go until the Mating Moon has set....

I love all the books in this series and it just keeps getting better and better with each one. Although they are written as stand alone stories complete with action, steamy bits and a HEA, the characters continue to grow through the books and new ones are added against the background of the continuing conflict between the Mesa Diablo pack and the hunters, with each new twist in the story adding an extra dimension that keeps me coming back for more. If you haven't read the previous books, don't worry, but you're missing out on a great series. I can't wait for the next one.

The Librarian and the Rogue
By Karli
Rafael Villalobos' black wolf is MIA. But when a foreign black wolf attacks Darling, the county librarian, Rafe's wolf rises to defend her. "Dare" is bitten by one of the black wolves, but which one? The intruder, who then tried to drag her into the woods? Or Rafe, who pulled her out of the way as the intruder struck? They may never be sure, since Rafe's wolf refuses to talk to him. Their only solution to stopping the intruder from completing the mating with her is for Rafe to preemptively mate with her. But unless Rafe' s wolf returns before the mating season ends, their mating won't 'take' and Rafe will fall to an outdated pack law that says rogues must be put down for the safety of the pack. And his wolf is showing no signs of coming back.

Review for Wolves of Angels Rest: ROGUE
I received this as an ARC for an honest review
Rafael Villalobos is a werewolf whose wolf has gone rogue…which is a death sentence for him if his pack finds out. He has no one to blame but himself for this because he has always chosen to be a more or less lone wolf, not listening when his wolf told him to look for his mate. Fear of losing another person close to him has kept him on the fringes of his pack and life. Darling Rowan has known Rafe for a very long time, she has had a crush on him , but has never acted on it. One night while in her yard, Darling catches a glimpse of a black wolf…she immediately believes it to be Rafe…and she leaves her yard to confront him. She is bitten by the wolf when she decides not to play the silly games Rafe likes to put her through. Although this time, there is also another black wolf…now she is not so sure the one who bit her was Rafe after all. The two wolves fight and in the end, it is Rafe who comes to her after all. He is upset about the bite because neither of them is sure who did the biting. Rafe feels it may be a rogue…and not his rogue….who is trying to force a mate bond. Darling tells him she wants him to bite her just in case, she does not want to be mated to a stranger. Rafe knows it is the only way to break the bond, but he worries about his rogue status. When he tells Darling about it, she gives him the ok to do it. But now the question is, who or what is the rogue and what does it want ?? As the moon becomes full and Darling transforms, Rafe has mixed feelings. He still cannot reach his wolf and he knowa the end is coming for him. But nothing transpires the way he figured it would and he takes drastic and quite possibly deadly actions for himself to save Darling and his pack. Will Rafe live through his decisions or will they ultimately take its toll…and what will happen with Darling if he succumbs ??

A Faith Filled Book on the Power and Need of Prayer
By Seeking Disciple
Leonard Ravenhill was a man with a passion for prayer. I had the honour of being able to meet brother Ravenhill and prayed at his home with him and his lovely wife, Martha. There were few writers who had impacted Leonard Ravenhill as had the works of E.M. Bounds. Brother Ravenhill took the combined works on prayer by Bounds and put them together in this wonderful book.

The book itself is hard to find but worth finding. The chapters are edited by Ravenhill from the collected books of Bounds. Ravenhill, being a great writer himself on prayer, was able to take the meat out of each of the books and put them into this work. What a wonder it is! It is one of the greatest challanges to prayer that a disciple of Jesus will read other than the New Testament.

Overall I highly recommmend this book to disciples. Your prayer life may be lacking but when you read this book (no matter how often you pray) you will find a heart that cries to draw near to the Lord (Hebrews 4:14-16).

Treasure is Right!
By J. Coursey
Prayer is the forgotten language of the present day church. EM Bounds expounds on communicating with God to a level far few will ever pay it's price to seek out. Leonard Ravenhill, the great revival preacher, does a great job in pulling the "meat" of the text from all of EM Bounds books into one great stronghold breaking book.

This is probably one of the greatest books on prayer the Christian church will ever know.

Do you want victory in your life as a believer?
By D. Holden
E.M. Bounds spent last years of his life writing what amounted to an encyclopedia of prayer. Edward McKendree Bounds prominently known as E.M. Bounds, was an American author, attorney, and member of the Methodist Episcopal Church South clergy. He is known for writing 11 books, nine of which focused on the subject of prayer.

Leonard Ravenhill was born in 1907 in the city of Leeds, in Yorkshire, England. After his conversion to Christ, he was trained for the ministry at Cliff College. It soon became evident that evangelism was his forte, and he engaged it with both vigor and power. Eventually he became one of England's foremost outdoor evangelists. His meetings in the war years drew traffic jamming crowds in Britain, and great numbers of his converts not only followed the Savior into the Kingdom, but into Christian ministry and the world's mission fields. In 1939 he married an Irish nurse named Martha. Together they had three sons. Paul and David are ministers, and Philip is a teacher. Leonard went home to be with the Lord in November of 1994.

I believe these are the follow book titles that Ravenhill studied, edited and included in THIS BOOK "TREASURY of PRAYER,
(1) Power through Prayer
(2) The Necessity of Prayer
(3) Prayer and Praying Men
(4) The Weapon of Prayer
(5) Purpose in Prayer
(6) The Reality of Prayer
(7) The Weapon of Prayer

As a chaplain in the Confederate States Army during the Civil War, Bounds initiated weekly prayer sessions to strengthen the spiritual state of his local area. His wisdom has impacted Christ-seekers for decades, and his words are as powerful now as they were in the 1800's. Bounds reminds us that throughout Biblical history, many of God's greatest movements were incited by the prayers of God's people. According to Bounds, prayer must be a priority.
Leonard Ravenhill studied the works of E. M. Bounds on prayer and made each book a chapter in this book, the treasury of prayer. Only the riches nuggets of truth could survive Ravenhill's spirit guided editing. What you get is rich, concise, and moving.
Almost every sentence is profound, every paragraph can be life changing. All you have to do is read it and believe it, then do it..
