Terrific Text Book OF Finishing a film
By Stanley D. Williams, PhD
A comprehensive, updated, description of how to post, edit and finish a film including both creative and mechanical processes. Clearly written, many tables, charts, and illustrations. Covers film, digital, and web preparaton workflows. Fabulous book. High recommenation. But this leans on the technical and workflow side, not the creative. A wonderful review of the ENTIRE process. Necessary text for all film students.

A purchase I regret.
By Michael D. Fisher
I read the first couple of chapters of this book (should've read it online). I had to stop reading it at that point because of the glaring errors of fact that it contained.

I am a professional 3d computer graphics artist, so by bent of the type of work I do, I'm already familiar with many of the tools and terms of the editing profession. I purchased this book because I wanted to expand my knowledge of the editing field and the book had several 5 star reviews. The first chapter of the book attempts to build a foundation upon which the rest of the book will be supported. This chapter had so many obvious errors of facts that it eroded any trust I could have in the information in the rest of the book.

If anyone who reads this review wants details I can dig them out of the text and put them in the comments below. Just send me a comment on this review with a request for details. I would've dug them out already but I'm not sure anyone is reading this review and I didn't want to waste even more time on this disappointing book.

BTW I have purchased many books on editing and have not been disappointed in any of them except this one. I will not write down any of the titles of those books in this review so I can avoid the appearance of being a shill for some other author. Suffice it to say, I have been able to trust almost all of the Amazon reviews of the 100+ books I've purchased from Amazon. This is one of the few in which the book's ratings bore no representation to the actual quality of the book.

I'm just sorry that I started to read the book so long after my purchase that I couldn't return it for a refund -- a few bucks I'll never get back.

EDIT: 8/26/10

I went to a Barnes & Noble last weekend and thumbed through the book again to see if my initial impression was even-handed. After browsing the book, I realized that I was probably too negative about the book in my initial review. The book doesn't contain so much "errors of facts" as it has "absence of facts". I felt like I was deprived of some essential learning. The beginning of the book just threw out a lot of "don't do this" and "do, do that". These were small nibbles on topics that should've been given way more context and explanation rather than just giving them the laundry-list treatment.

Also, large portions of the book are devoted to the physical cutting of film. Physical film cutting is anachronistic, even for 2006. Nowadays, even if a movie is shot on film, the film is edited digitally (with the exception being so minuscule as to be non-existent).

I didn't feel like I got that much out of the book but maybe others will. I'll add a star to be more even-handed.

If you want a career in the film industry, I highly recommend this book.
By C. Jackson
I am an assistant (and sometimes still an apprentice) editor. When my Academy Award winning editor/boss told me to get this book, I didn't believe him. I knew how to run the Avid in my sleep and was getting jobs. But he was using it and recommending it to everyone he knew and then it was reviewed in this month's (July/August) Editors Guild magazine by a guy I trust. So I ordered it. Now I am recommending it. It covers everything you want to know about editing but were afraid to ask. It talks about the process and why editor's cut, not just how to digitize (it covers that generally) and how to get a job (I agree.) It has lots of useful charts and tables of all the stuff that you forget to remember such as formats, aspect ratios, film-to-tape conversion and vice versa. The author has clearly been in the editing trenches. I like her humorous tidbits and historical references like how R2D2 got his name. She also covers film - syncing, cutlists, neg cutting, etc. thoroughly which freaks the computer generation like me sometimes just as much as digital stuff can freaks older editors and directors. The film information as well as the digital, Web, DVD, and tape processes she so thoroughly details, have been invaluable to me in my work, paid and non. Speaking of which, gotta get back to my web film!
